Welcome to Fifth Grade at Intervale Elementary School! Fifth Graders enjoy more independence and more responsibilities.
In Language Arts, students work in both large and small groups to read and analyze texts. One main focus is recognizing the point of view of characters and authors. As students delve deeper into more complex texts, they increase their reading stamina and analytic skills. They advance their writing strategies and skills by writing both short and long pieces to develop stronger writing skills.
In Mathematics, students work hard to master the basic operations addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. As the year progresses, fractions and decimals are embedded within the operations. Our Go Math program uses a word problem approach. Within each lesson, students learn to work with numbers as well as solve both one step and multistep problems.
In Social Studies, students explore Colonial Times. They learn about the development of the colonies and discuss how people lived. They examine the Revolutionary War, and they learn how the framing of the Constitution set up our new country. After learning about the intricacies of how the government works, students examine the Civil War.
In Science, students engage in various activities . Using our interactive Science Fusion textbooks, students annotate in their books. They also enjoy online digital lessons that accompany what they’ve read in the text. Students explore technology, engineering, and the importance of innovation.
Students receive daily homework that typically includes Reading, Spelling, Math, and studying content area skills. Students complete a Reading Calendar each month to document the books they read and the number of minutes spent reading. Students work on various short and long term projects throughout the year.
Activities and Privileges
In Fifth Grade, students become part of the leadership of our school. Fifth Graders enjoy privileges such as Safety Patrol where they help students get around the school safely and Peacemakers where they help facilitate playground disagreements at recess.
With Intervale’s Student Council program, students experience running for Executive Board and the democratic processes for electing leaders. The Student Council members are an integral part of planning various activities and events at school. Fifth Grade Buddies is a cherished tradition at Intervale where each Fifth Grader is paired up with a Kindergartener. Throughout the year, the buddies meet for projects, reading time, and other fun activities.
Fifth Graders remain active with our Intramurals program. Throughout the winter, they learn and play basketball and volleyball. This program ends with the Teachers versus students games.
At the end of the year, students enjoy a Moving Up ceremony as part of our Fifth Grade Recognition. This is a celebration of the hard work of the students as they move on from Intervale.
Fifth grade is an enjoyable and fun filled year!
