First grade is such an amazing year of growth and change. We start off learning that our vowels are the "Stars of the Alphabet" and in a blink of an eye, students start to become readers. We will focus on phonetic skills and word attack strategies. Students will be reading fiction and non-fiction selections and will have an opportunity to choose stories based on their interests.
In Math, first graders are starting off the year learning about numbers. We are adding and subtracting and demonstrating different ways of showing a numbers. Students are busy using manipulative's, white boards and interactive technology. Students are becoming familiar with new vocabulary and using critical thinking skills to solve problems.
Our readers are busy working both independently and with small groups. Readers have created interest book boxes and enjoy reading about some of their favorite things. We are working on phonic skills as well as comprehension skills. Students are becoming detectives while finding story evidence to answer questions.
