Hi Parents,

We have been back for over a week now with both cohorts and have added some of our remote students. Teachers and Staff are very happy to have them back. It definitely makes things somewhat “normal”. In speaking with so many of the children, they, too, seem very happy to be here. It is so important for their social and emotional well being to see their friends and have consistency in their daily routine. For some, it will feel almost new sitting at a desk for a longer period of time, having to ask permission to go to the bathroom and not being able to open the refrigerator whenever they feel a need for a snack.

We, as a district and as a school, want you to know that the social-emotional well being of your child is our top priority. We have opened up our playground for the kids to take breaks. Teachers are constantly monitoring how the students are coping and spending time in classroom meetings where the children can share what they are experiencing. If a child feels safe and secure, his/her desire to be in school increases and learning becomes easier.

We all look forward to the time where our students are all back in school full time and we can return to a somewhat “normal” time. I don’t think we will take this for granted anymore. Please let me know if any of your children are struggling with being back.

Meet the Counselor

Welcome! I am Donna O’Donnell, the school counselor here at Intervale Elementary School. I have been here at Intervale for twenty one years and think of it as my second home. Before becoming a counselor, I was a sixth grade teacher and then raised my four children. Having such a love for children, I decided to go back to school to become a school counselor as my kids got older. That is why I always tell parents that I have a degree in counseling psychology and school counseling but I am a mom first which helps greatly in working with my students and their parents. In addition to being the counselor, I am also the anti-bullying specialist, chairperson for the Intervention and Referral Services Committee as well as having many other duties at Intervale. I think of each student at the school as my own, seeing to their social, emotional and academic well being. I work closely with the staff to ensure that all children entering our building feel safe and welcomed. I am a firm believer that the school and home must work together in order for a child to succeed. Outside of school, you will find me spending time with my eight grandchildren, friends or reading.
